Feb 27, 2023 – Bequia to Tobago Cays

Stephen and I are the early risers. I am also the designated coffee maker (big shocker to anyone who has read any of these adventures) altho I am usually the lone consumer on board. Quick workout on the deck then splash in the ocean becomes my usual routine for the next couple weeks. Great start to the day as the coffee is pretty good too.

We take turns over the week driving to recover the anchor, raising sails, etc. and today is no different. We sail out around Bequia south head. Christy and I are charged with doing the navigation and explaining it to Colby and Stephen and it is good to do the practice again. This is really the only navigation we’ll do as everything is within sight.

Practicing navigation.

The day is sunny and warm, every day we’re here is pretty much 28C and clear with stiff breezes so mostly perfect on a sailboat. Every now and then we get 5 minutes of rain. Only danger is sunburn so care is taken there. I hate sunblock but a necessary evil here.

4+ hours to Tobago Cays from Bequia

Soon becomes apparent Willow Dew is pretty much a dog to sail as far as speed goes – halfway thru the 20 mile ride we turn on the engines so we can get there in time. There is a bbq every night on the Petit Rameau and we want to get there in time.

We do.

Anchor in the channel just off Petit Rameau, quick snorkel with Stephen on the other side where the turtles are but don’t stay long.

First of many snorkels. Where the hell did the word snorkel come from anyway?

Colby has a drone, takes some very cool shots over the week.

Looking towards Africa in Tobago Cays – the turtle sanctuary is where all those yachts are anchored

Atsa boat and atsa us. Not sure where Stephen is.

It’s BYOB at the bbq and we’ve ordered lobster. We share a bottle of wine with Captain Ian and sit with the two other boats that are out of Barefoot. They keep bringing us more lobster so we keep eating it. All bbq’ed on an open grill with tons of rice, slaw salad, fried plantain and eventually the ubiquitous banana bread.

Yes, in fact we are gluttons

Colby resists the NY girls again and we are back on board the boat soon enough.
