Nice cool night, hot and sunny again today.
A bit cloudy in the morning so I check the weather but all looks good. We’ve got a pretty big sail today, about 6 hours to Bequia, I’m hoping to sail almost all the way.
I raise the dinghy, determined this time to secure it so it doesn’t swing like a mad cat again. Damage almost guaranteed like that. We motor out of the Cays away from the reef danger (lotsa that around the Cays) and put up the sails.
We are rocking. Making 7 kts upwind and sailing well. Big smiles all around.
Until my dinghy secure job comes loose again. Half hitches, no matter how many, just won’t hold on the stainless steel support bars. I try to secure it as well as possible while underway but not much can be done unless we completely stop and redress. Not my style, I don’t think it is going to be too bad. (Side note, one of the support cables I made to replace the ones we broke on our first trip was rubbing on something and wore almost through, but otherwise all is OK. I make another one the next day in Bequia.)
Wind slowly drops as we pass behind Canouan and then a bit in the lee of Bequia. We have to tack almost 10 nms west of Bequia because of the wind angle but we average well over 5 kts the whole way. The last 10 nms we tack again – I expect to be pointed right at Admiralty Bay but we can only angle about 15 degrees to the south of it. We could tack again but when within a few miles of Bequia, we drop sails and motor the rest of the way in. Charges the batteries too.
Back in Admiralty Bay. We like Bequia, everyone does. We find a good anchor spot without much trouble. Not too close, not too far. I drop the dinghy, notice the almost broken cable, we go to town, get some groceries and stuff.
I did something to my foot yesterday climbing a mountain in flip flops and it hurts like crazy so I get some aspirin. Either we forgot or things have gotten crazy expensive in the last year cuz things are crazy expensive.
Meet a guy on the street who at first I think is a rummy but he’s selling a whole bag of mangoes for EC$10. I asked him “where did you steal these from?” he laughs we end up chatting a bit. I think he is just a spiritual guy with a mango tree. They’re not quite ripe but in a few days they will be. Good deal, especially in a place where a pineapple goes for C$12.
Back on the boat Christy makes dinner, again. Did I mention she does ALL the cooking? She says she likes the deal – I fix things, she cooks. I’m OK with that too.
We’re in bed pretty early. I didn’t take any pictures today!
