Nov 23, 2022 – Homestead to Islamorada

Nice day, we’re up and moving nowhere near early enough for my taste but probably just about perfect for Christy. I have lotsa time so dig out the camp stove and make coffee in the room (I now have experience with all hotel coffee makers and I know the one in this room won’t cooperate), rearrange the car a bit and generally get ready.

Free hotel breakfast is high on carbs, low on nutrients so we don’t take much but hit the road where I …

… fill up on gas …

and

… check the oil. Those leaves under the hood have travelled at least 4000 km from Huntsville

Not sure why Christy thought these were picworthy but since they are of me my vanity ruled them inclusive.

We’re headed to Key West, about 3 hours away then back to Islamorada for the night. Christy drives while I try to find a suitable sailboat tour for us. Not too long, just enough to get some ocean time. Find one, we roll up with 20 minutes to spare.

Holy mackinaw Joe, it’s hot! Well, it’s about 27C which is the hottest we’ve seen since, what, 2021? Not a hot summer in Huntsville, Ontario. We change into less clothing and take the tour on America 2.0 – a 105 ft schooner built to resemble the original America, the first boat to win what is now called The America’s Cup sailboat race. 2 beers, 1.5 hours later, we’re back at the docks, just about what we wanted.

Christmas trees and “Jack Frost nipping at your nose” loudly playing seem oddly out of place here.
Nice to get out there

We walk around the old town, some pretty touristy, some interesting, especially off the main drag. Buy some stuff for gifts and end up having a very decent meal on the waterfront.

Zats her
Zats me
Zats ze boat

I drive the 2 hours back to Islamorada and our quirky room in our quirky resort hotel. More on that tomorrow.

  1. Love your colourful commentary of the journey! If you didn’t mind taking those Huntsville leaves down to Florida, maybe you won’t mind bringing some of those Florida sunshine rays back to Huntsville:)
