Dec 1, 2022 – Fort DeSoto to Huntsville, AL

This makes one month since our departure.

I’m up before 6 can’t sleep anymore on the hard pan and not going to bother reinflating these g-d thermarests again. Besides, we want to pack up and go in a hurry as we have a big day ahead.

Thankfully it never rained again, pretty windy and much cooler though so looks like we made the most of the weather at least.

We are packed and moving out by 7:55 am. We take turns driving all day and into the night – will arrive in Huntsville about 8 pm. We decide to check out the Big Bend area of Florida – the only area we have not really seen. It’s gonna add an hour or so to the 8 hour drive but we’re still young.

This was pretty weird. Just north of Homosassa we see half a dozen of these contrails crossing like this. Definitely looks intentional – conspiracy theories abound from the driver.

Spooooooky
Christy not too happy waiting for me to climb this tower and paint my name on it

We drive around to Panacea (love that name) – this area looks super cool and just our speed. It is called The Forgotten Coast – has everything we like but no crowds, not too expensive.

Near St. Teresa, approaching the ocean.

We stop at Carabelle, talk to a reator, very nice. I take over driving and book it through the panhandle back roads, it’s beautiful but slow. Very cool when a bald eagle flies out of the forest over our car as we are driving through Tate’s Hell State Forest. Happens too fast for Christy to get a picture. Not sure who Tate was or why this forest is Hellish.

Not sure google maps is finding the shortest way as we are twisting and turning and seem to be avoiding the major highways. Switch to waze, pretty much the same thing.

Christy takes over around the Alabama border and drives to Montgomery, AL where it gets dark, we stop for some supplies at Winn Dixie, can’t seem to get a decent coffee around here so I make do with super power Snickers.

Christy using The Force to drive: must be something to this meditation thing. I was just trying to catch the sunset in Alabama

I take over and book it as still 3 hours to go to Huntsville. Roads are good, traffic not too bad and I am regularly making 130 km/hr except as we go through Birmingham (which looks like a really cool city – kinda wish we could stop and stay but I am booking it, remember?). Both of us happy to get to the Red Roof Inn (aka El Cheapo Hotel/Motel) around 8:30 pm. Been on the road for more than 12 hours and even the car is tired I think.

Didn’t even remember to turn this on until well after Tampa
