April 25th, 2024, Woburn Bay, Grenada

Sunny, hot.

Getting down to crunch time. We haul out at 1:00 pm tomorrow so lots to do before that. We are going to park overnight on the docks at Clarke’s (one night included in haulout/launch) and there is even work to do getting ready for that. Rental car is coming at 1 pm so we can go to the hospital and hopefully hit Budget Marine and Ace Hardware too.

VHF to Jose on channel 11 and arrange for them to meet us as we approach. They are very helpful as it is a tight squeeze where they have put us. It’s good to have lots of fresh water now (though we can’t use chlorinated stuff for the water maker) to be able to clean with impunity.

I take down the dodger and we shuttle it over to Ullman’s where Christy takes it up and has a long and fruitful discussion with Kelly there. We will repair the dodger enough for it to last one more season, then probably replace next spring. But she also learns about the best way to make a sunshade. She’ll pick the material later and email it in.

Soon enough it’s time to go meet the rental car, Y&R is delivering it free (I will use them forever now) so I limp up there. The security people are so great, they take great interest in my injuries and tell us where we should go to get it looked at. Should have talked to them earlier, we used expat’s advice and have an appointment for 2 pm at SAMS – St. Augustine Medical Services – a private hospital the locals say is too expensive. I dunno, that’s what the expats told us to do.

The car arrives a few minutes late and we get thoroughly turned around and end up in downtown St. George’s in areas we’ve never seen before. That is a pretty interesting trip though.

Finally get to SAMS where I get triaged, see the Latin American doctor, have an X ray and get fitted with an old school cast, all in under 3 hours. Couldn’t do that in Canada even. Cost = about EC$1200 or C$600 but we’re pretty sure our insurance will cover that (we registered a claim before going). I am pretty happy when the doctor confirms, “No that is not gout, you have a 3rd degree sprain. You need crutches and a ton of Ibuprofen.” Both will be a heavenly help over the next few days.

Need the prescription for insurance
Can’t find a belt anywhere in Grenada or SVG but I do get some fancy new footwear.

By the time we are done it is too late to go to Budget or Ace so we head back to the boat. These are the events that dog us this week – losing an hour or three here or there makes it difficult to finish tasks we could do but now must outsource.

Security people are all impressed with my new hardware, they are so great here. Back on the docks we do what we can before nightfall but are in bed early. Tomorrow is going to be a biiiiiiig day.
