27 Nov 2024 – 3 Dec 2024

As I noted on the last post, I am updating this in February, 2025. I knew I was far behind but I didn’t realize I’d missed a whole week.

On the 27th of November we FINALLY left Woburn Bay bound for a day or so in Carriacou. We don’t get far under power before we notice black smoke in the exhaust and occasional blobs of oil in our wake.

That’s not good.

We sail to the bottom of Grenada and start heading up the leeward side but it is clear the problem is not going away and we may in fact be doing some damage to the engine. I’ve checked the temperature and oil when we stop and everything seems OK but this is too risky on the motor. We turn around and sail back to Woburn Bay, ending the sailing for the entire 5 weeks we were here.

6 hours.

We did try fishing on the way back but no luck there either.

Proof! We did go sailing

Nils swings by and asks why we are back and also notes the black soot on the side of the boat. He says “it’s your turbocharger” – that never occurred to me but later when I do my research I am sure he is right. Didn’t even know we had a turbocharger. Nudder learning moment.

On Friday we motor over with Axel to Mt. Hartman Bay where we have arranged a mooring with George for the Christmas season. Over the next day or two Axel finishes the fiberglass job and we buy him dinner at the Secret Harbour Yacht Club. Expensive for pretty average food, but decent.

We find out that on his way home one night Axel got tangled in the fishing nets off Hog Island and almost got stranded.

I help him with his mast/rigging issues on Saturday and generally, Christy and I spend the next couple of days getting Milu ready to be left behind for two months. Biggest worry is the water coming in but George says he’ll look after it.

I arrange with James from Horizon to take a look at the turbocharger, he ends up fixing it in January.

We fly out Tuesday, December 3rd, back to Canada.
