16 January 2026, Friday, Roseau to Portsmouth, Dominica

We’re not in a great hurry to get away but soon enough we’re packed up and ready to move off this mooring.

Only one problem, our mooring lines have wound around the ball and can’t be pulled out. I have to snorkel over to undo them while Christy waits with the motor running just in case the boat slips fast after I release it. Takes about 10 minutes for me to untangle the lines but eventually it’s done and we motor out of Roseau on flat calm water.

We motor sail all day towards Portsmouth. The wind changes strength and direction all the time. We only leave the genoa partly up and do pretty good with just it in comparison to the other boats around us.

Anchored in Portsmouth with the fort/Cabrits behind

We’ve arranged to meet Scott and Carol for dinner but by the time we’re safely anchored near the main dock it’s raining hard and getting dark. We don’t want to be dinghying around in the dark and rain in a strange harbour so we tell them we’ll meet tomorrow at the market.

The disco blasts that awful music at volume 11 all night. Luckily the hatches are closed because of the rain and with that and the fan, it’s pretty bearable.
