Forgot to give David his pump back yesterday so I dinghy over there and drop it off, say goodbyes. They are headed back to their home base of Antigua, we’ll hopefully run into them again.
Christy and I were going to rent a golf cart today to explore the island (about EU$70) but decide the whole thing is quite walkable so we will give that a shot.
First stop is Fort Napoleon, a conspicuous old fort at the top of the hill. Apparently it’s pretty interesting. It closes at 12:30 pm so we make our way up the big hill by about 10:30 am. It’s a good uphill walk, most people electing to scooter or golf cart it. Probably a couple hundred conveyances at the top.

It’s a pretty impressive fort + museum though it never saw any action and Napoleon never visited it, Josephine never visited her namesake on Isle of Cabrits across the bay either. Very well maintained and preserved although the museum rooms on the inside have very little to do with the fort itself but island life in general. We stroll around and take photos, then time to depart.

We walk back down the hill to the turnoff for Plage de Pompierre, reportedly the best beach on the island. It is a very nice beach, we find a shady, grassy spot, go for a swim and have lunch. We walk across the rocks to the south-east end of the beach where there is a place you can wade across to a little island. We elect not to go, looks like not a lot to see. (Side note, as I’m writing this 6 days later I learn that apparently there is a hole in the rock at the end of the island where the waves explode and make an interesting spectacle. Oops, missed it.) Walk back gingerly across the rocks. We collect our gear and head back to town.

It’s a pleasant walk and since it’s hot and we’re salty it’s ice cream time. Christy has found a nice shop that serves dark chocolate ice cream up to her standards. They are out of that flavour but the mango/chocolate combination is very refreshing.
We’re planning on leaving tomorrow so head back to the boat to get ready. As I’m stringing the dinghy up I see one of the mondo fishes is back. They are huge, although I only see one this time. Not going to poo-poo my chance to catch it, I go and get a rod and drop in a line. The fish swims right up to it and I’m sure I’ve got him but he just swims by, goes off into the deep never to be seen again. I think I insulted him.
I leave the line and rod in the water and sleep in the cockpit for a bit in case he comes back and takes the bait. He doesn’t, it starts to rain so I go to the aft cabin to sleep so I will hear the reel if it starts to take off. It never does.
