April 8th, 2024 – Mayreau to Tobago Cays, SVG

Sunny, hot.

We’re up early so we can get a good spot in the Cays. It’s only about an hour motor away so off we go, we’re moored in a good position by 9:30 am.

We fritter away the morning then decide to go ashore for a hike up the big hill behind Petite Bateau, the small island where we will have BBQ lobster on the beach tonight. It’s a rough landing and Christy has hurt her toe some more so she is not up to the scramble up the hill. Off I go alone.

I find the path, which turns into a goat path, which turns into an iguana path which turns into an ant path. I’m halfway up this bloody hill now firmly trapped in a forest of cactus, rocks and scratchy, thorny plants.

Wottanidiot. Could have asked for directions but nooooooo.

It is literally a fight for every advance not to get sliced to ribbons or stabbed to death. The only reason I keep going is because I figure there has got to be a path at the top and I’ll be able to get down easily. If not, I’m in big trouble.

I come around a corner face-to-face with a large iguana who I’m sure has never seen a human before. I ask him (her?) if this is the way up and he nods his head. Seriously, he bobbed his head vigorously.

Word of advice – don’t trust iguanas.

He doesn’t even look trustworthy

Another 15 minutes of scratching my way, I get to the top. There’s a path big enough to drive a car up. What fun is that? Take a few pics then amble down in luxury. I’ve hurt my ankle a bit somehow climbing a mountain in flip flops (isn’t that what the Sherpas do?) but not terribly worried.

Christy is there. We go back to the Milu for snorkel gear to go see the turtles. In the turtle sanctuary the surf is too rough for us to lift our dinghy to safety and we also forgot the anchor. We’ve swam with the turtles 5 times now, we can miss this time.

Back to Milu to clean up a bit. I actually bathe in the ocean.

At 6 pm we go for the usual big lobster dinner. The crustaceans are huge, the rest of the portions match. Captain Neil comes over to chat, we see Tex from Blue Lagoon no one else we know.

Back on board Milu and in bed by 9 pm.
