Day 5 – Annapolis to Hatteras

Chris a bit under the weather so I eat her breakfast (sacrifices have to be made and food cannot be wasted). Find a good coffee shop then hit the highway for the long drive to Hatteras.

Spectacular day – 26 degrees, no wind, no clouds and we are soon in pretty rural country with good roads going south. Lemme tell you these are some mondo bridges we cross today. The land is flat flat flat but not much to see on the central highway. We know the coastlines offer lots to see and do but they are not near and we don’t have the time to explore.

I’m trying to say there is not much to see.

That’s why I wear two pairs of glasses

Definitely get a feel for the size of Chesapeake Bay as we drive for hours before a lunch stop in Cape Charles on the ocean not far from the bridge to the mainland. It’s friggin’ 26 degrees and it is just like summer except zero tourists. In fact, a consistent issue is many of the places we would investigate are closed for the season. Still, get a great lunch at a pub there – my fish tacos definitely deserve a beer but too far to go yet. Want a coffee but the cafe is closed.

Could waterski anywhere on Chesapeake Bay today

Amazing bridge/tunnel to the mainland – Christy spies dolphins in the bay, I’m trying not to crash as the view is great on this perfect day.

Through Virginia Beach and Norfolk across another big bridge to OBX – the Outer Banks. Very Wasaga Beach-like for miles and miles until the spit eventually narrows to the Hatteras parklands and there is nothing but dunes and scrub. Quite a few camp and fishing spots, might be an interesting place to stay if you like dune walking, birding, fishing.

About an hour later we get to the small village of Rodanthe which is a cluster of stilted homes right on the water, and in some cases IN the water. Kinda wild place. I’m guessing a lot of surfers come here, the Atlantic looks pretty wild even on this calm night with a full moon.

Christy feeling better tho still pretty snotty so we have a hot tub, well, warm tub then off to finish digital needs and bed.
