Day 6 – Hatteras to Holly Ridge

I am hoping that empty nesters adventures will start to become more adventurous.

Perhaps today. Though the night was calm and beautiful full moon with tons of stars over the ocean, by morning the wind is so strong the whole house is shaking. I secure the hot tub cover as it is trying to sail to the mainland and luckily grab our drying swimsuits before they do the same. We will see drifting sand today like we see drifting snow at home replete with the heavy machinery to move it off the roads.

Mercifully our host (absent – we have the place to ourselves) has a coffee maker instead of a Keurig. The one thing tough for me in America is their near-total lack of decent coffee.

We’re off pretty early to catch the two ferries to the mainland – ferry stop is at the end of Hatteras Island about 45 minutes away. We get there early but the wind is so strong no ferries are running today. Or probably tomorrow. Or likely the next day. The guy in the booth advises us to get off the OBX and go around through the mainland. Not much choice.

Quick stop on the beach where the wind is howling but the gang is still fishing. They drive their trucks right down to and pretty much on the beach. We’ll visit the museum and head out. The museum is closed – I guess the proprietors use the ferry to get there.

Doesn’t do the wind justice

This museum was dead. (See what I did there?)

Drive all the way back up OBX and across to North Carolina. At least there is a short cut. Roads are amazingly good, pretty empty and we often wonder “what was the economic justification to this road and the mondo bridge at the end?” Lunch stop in Washington NC and we eat at the park on the Pamlico River. Not bad.

Washington Crab Shack – awesome lamp shades

Buncha hours later we arrive at Holly’s Ridge in NC. Our Air BnB is just a room in a couple’s (pretty new) house in a suburb of Surf City. Kinda weird but clean and neat and they’re nice. We go to Surf City but it’s mostly closed, and pretty cold. We watch the surfers a bit (yeah, that’s nutty) then head back to the house for rehydrated dinner. Apparently a hurricane is coming so we elect to get a hotel in Myrtle Beach next two nights instead of camping.

Duuuuuuuude. Some surfers out there somewhere.
