Mar 8, 2023 – Union Island to Mayreau

Another perfect morning in SVG. Today we’re visiting an island Christy and I skipped last week – Mayreau. Its a short sail from Bad Luck Bay to a very nice cove called Salt Whistle Bay on the northern end of the small Island by a somewhat recently abandoned beach resort – probably within the last 10 years.

United again

The beach is beautiful – a narrow isthmus joining the main island to a small headland. Christy and I swim to shore and explore the Atlantic side of the isthmus which is where the kite surfers go. Then we walk around the empty all-stone buildings. The open air restaurant looks like it was used yesterday and in fact some beach vendors have set up in some of the protection. Must’ve been a great spot. The maintenance buildings are next but on entry to one the flutter of wings and the sight of dozens of bats encourages to explore elsewhere.

There are perhaps 10 2-unit houses, each with a bedroom, bathroom and upstairs veranda. All in decent shape still. Apparently a Canadian couple built this and operated it for years until he died. Then his kids inherited it and that was the end of that. 20+ acres for sale now for about $9 million but no one knows if that’s EC or US. Now there are just 4 or 5 beach bars here.

Christy, Dave and Heather explore a bit more (Dave is interested in the bats) while I go back to the boat. When the others join we decide to walk up the hill to the church where there is apparently a great lookout. Greg shuttles us in.

It’s hot but the lookout is worth it. We walk down the other side into the town and Christy and I go all the way down to the beach and look around. It’s not touristy, perhaps a little industrial here though the beach is nice and there are the usual bars and restaurants. We stop for cold water halfway back up the hill.

Back at Salt Whistle Bay Christy is accosted by a guy who wants to sell her a fresh coconut. To Dave and my chagrin she accepts and we have to wait while he climbs a tree, gets a coconut and opens it for her. I’m pretty sure he took the money and went straight to the bar and we are glad to move on.

After a late lunch on the boat, Dave and I chill while the girls go SUPing again. Next thing you know Greg is there in the dinghy – the girls are at the beach bar and they want us to come and bring money. So we do.

Greg and Laura are there with Brian, Erin and her cousin from the charter. Turns out Erin owns the cat they are on and she keeps it in the Barefoot fleet for chartering.

We have a couple drinks, I play bean bag toss with Laura tho neither of us know the rules. Time to go, the girls invite the other boat over after dinner, the oblige and we end up having a bit of a bender dance party under a full moon.

OK so we had a couple
