Jan 7, 2024 PM to Tobago Cays to Carriacou

Ben and Audrey are still a bit miffed at us for not giving them the promised turtle show so I have an idea. I call our friend over there, Captain Neil and ask him if we run any risk dropping anchor, swimming with the turtles, then leaving even though we haven’t checked into the country (SVG). He says no. Good enough for me, we decide to take that plunge.

We’re off pretty early since we have to go around Palm Island, Union Island and Mayreau to get to the Tobago Cays. We were explicitly told we’re not allowed to approach the Cays from the south – sailboat graveyard there.

We’re eventually anchored in the cut between the two islands and then we dinghy over to the spot where the marine park is – that’s where the turtles are. Pretty sure the kids didn’t really believe us there were turtles but sure enough there are fish, stingrays, turtles galore. We GoPro’d quite a bit. They really enjoyed it.

Ready or not, here we come turtles

Back on the boat, we get ready to depart. We have to get back to Grenada, Carriacou – it’s only about 90 minutes. Dinghy davit motor stops working so we McGiver something to get us to Carriacou. Call Moorings and they send someone to meet us there.

We motorsail down the backside of Union Island – there’s Bezo’s yacht in Chatham Bay. Make good time.

I drive the dinghy all over Tyrell Bay trying to find our guy, turns out he is at the marina so I find him and take him out to the boat. He fixes the motor pretty quickly, we buy him a beer and then take him back to shore. He recommends a restaurant for us and that’s where we go.

I don’t remember if it was at the restaurant or back at the boat where I discovered my phone is missing. We search and search – it is gone. Musta dropped out of my pocket when we went ashore for dinner.

Dinner is good. There is a funky little 4 piece band of octogenarians that are pretty good though you can’t hear the words they are singing.

I swim for my phone but no luck.

We’re doing a good job of trying to kill off the bottle of rum we bought, playing euchre and yahtzee most nights.

Dad the all time winner in everything.
