Jan 8, 2024 Carriacou to Grand Mal Bay

This is our last full day on the boat together, tho most of it will be spent doing the sail from Carriacou down to Moliniere Point. Audrey didn’t get to see the underwater sculptures there so we will stop and anchor nearby so we’re close to Port Louis in the morning.

We start off sailing only, Ben grumbling about losing time so we should be motoring. Yeah, well. Make good time.

As we approach Isle la Ronde it becomes apparent we are about to be hit by a rain squall. NOW we pull in the sails and hustle into the protection of the bay there under motor in a full out rain deluge. Kinda fun really.

Wild but mercifully short

Have a bit of lunch there, then continue on. It’s always pretty rough until you get into the lee of Grenada, then pretty easy going.

It’s early afternoon when we get to the underwater statue park at Moliniere Point and we manage to get a mooring ball right beside the park so don’t have to swim too much. Unfortunately, the visibility is not very good – it was much better 4 days ago. Still it is interesting and we get some GoPro Video.

Too bad visibility was not great

OK, now where to get dinner and park for the night. We opt to anchor in Grand Mal Bay which is right there. Seems like a safe spot and there MUST be a restaurant there, no?

No.

After dinghying to a very sketchy commercial dock, we scour the “town” (more like a gas station stop) for something, anything. No luck. OK, maybe we can get a frozen pizza from the grocery. Even the word grocery is an embellishment. There are some pizza pockets and some frozen pizza from 1979 there. Ben and I leave Mom and Audrey to secure the deal while we go back for the dinghy (it’s a couple hundred yards away).

We can see the dinghy from the shoreline – should we hike back up and down the hill or take the short cut? Short cut of course. It’s not far, just gotta cross this short breakwall of rocks. Well before you know it we’re being crushed by surf, soaked to the skin, hanging on for our lives on the slippery rocks. We both get banged up a bit – should we turn around? Don’t be ridiculous – what kind of men would do that?

Smart ones would do that.

We eventually make it and go back for Audrey and Mom. It’s dark and they shine their phone lights so we can see them. Pick ’em up, turns out they paid something crazy like C$75 for a couple of completely inedible pizzas. You’d think hungry people could eat any kind of pizza but these are not fit for humans. Probably not fit for fish either but that’s who gets them.

Now we know why they call it Grand Mal – the Big Sick.
