April 20th, 2024 Carriacou to Prickly Bay

Hot, sunny, very little wind

We’ve reserved a mooring ball in Prickly Bay for Saturday and Sunday night. We’re hoping to make it there before 2 pm so we can go to Budget Marine and Ace Hardware which are not too far away. (Budget is on the bay itself).

Only problem is there is no wind! We have a very pleasant sail down the east side of Grenada but at noon we turn the engines on as there’s no way we’re going to get there before dark at this pace. Usually less than 10 kts of wind which is crazy for this side of the island. We expected to be hurtling down the coast at 8-9 kts with only partial sail but we’re crawling with all canvas out. Still it is very comfortable. So comfortable, in fact, I do my laundry!

You could almost water ski out there in what is usually a very windy coast
Nice day tho.

We wind our way down the coast, no other sailboats the whole way which is a bit surprising but waddya know? Just a couple of fisherman here and there. We experiment with wing-on-wing sailing with a preventer on the main. Works for stopping accidental gybe and stops the main from starving the jib of wind but I don’t think we’d make much more than 2 or 3 kts regardless without the motor.

Roll into Prickly Bay just after 3 pm, too late to go to the hardware store by the time we find our mooring in this crowded parking lot and drop the dinghy, etc.

First order of the day? Showers. Included in the mooring price, we go ashore. It is very refreshing even tho the water is only lukewarm. I even shave.

My foot is really killing me, I can hardly walk but we are going to go back to the great bar at Prickly Bay Marina for Happy Hour and to meet the lady who is going to exchange our “Windward Islands” guide book. Ours is missing a whole bunch of important pages and she graciously came to Prickly Bay to do the exchange.

Christy and I have a drink and a pizza each (half price doncha know). It’s my first drink in a week cuz I’m trying to avoid gout but since nothing I do seems to matter, might as well have a drink. There is a band coming on at 7 pm and people are starting to gather but my foot is on fire and no way can I stay another 40 minutes on this stool. Sorry, but we have to go back.

A couple of advils later I’m on the back deck in agony but somehow the advils let me sleep which is how the pain goes away. We can hear the band – they sound great, the woman singer’s voice is amazing. We’ll come back in the fall.
